Abstract: Can literature be investigated through quantitative methods? Can style, empathy, and prestige be measured? This study attempts to respond to these questions by providing results from a selection of case studies taken from German literature of the 19th through the 21st century, including Goethe's "late style", Felix Salten, and the output of contemporary writers such as Florian Meimberg's "twitterature" and Daniel Glattauer's e-mail novel. Altogether, this study shows how the interplay among literary theory, stylometry, stylistics, sentiment analysis, empirical studies, and archival research can offer new answers to old questions regarding German literature and provide tools to formulate new questions and novel approaches to research.(Umschlagtext)

Abstract: This action research (AR) study concerns an English for Specific Academic Purposes (ESAP) course taught to undergraduate economics students at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, a trilingual university in Italy whose degree programmes are taught in German, Italian and English. Despite English for Specific Purposes being an approach to address learner needs, no accurate needs analysis had been conducted. Therefore this study instituted a wide-ranging needs analysis and from the data collected a new learner-centred syllabus was developed for the ESAP course that blended elements from both a product and process approach to syllabus design using classroom negotiation to foster productive skills. Abstract: This book sets out to try to understand why segregated schooling still exists, especially in northern Italy in South Tyrol where they practice ‘separate but equal’ education. Supported by the UN, the Austrian and Italian governments, the province is considered a ‘peace model’ due to its consociational approach to dealing with the region’s Nazi and Fascist past, which has led to a ‘negative peace’. The autonomy statutes, which derived from this ‘peace’, resulted in an education system that is linguistically segregated for the purposes of protecting South Tyrol’s ethnolinguistic minorities. Ann Wand is the Founder and Director of The Oxford Method, an online British university preparatory programme for international students interested in attending Britain’s top universities. She is also the Programme Manager for Customised Faculty led programmes in Oxford, England and Florence, Italy at the American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS). By examining responses to South Tyrol's education system, and its impact on local group dynamics, this book explores the implications that segregated schooling may have on second language acquisition. This case study will be of interest to students and scholars of Italian studies, anthropology, linguistic ethnography, sociolinguistics, and second language education.

Abstract: Carol Loeb Shloss creates a compelling portrait of a complex relationship of a daughter and her literary-giant father: Ezra Pound and Mary de Rachewiltz, Pound’s child by his long-time mistress, the violinist Olga Rudge. Brought into the world in secret and hidden in the Italian Alps at birth, Mary was raised by German peasant farmers, had Italian identity papers, a German-speaking upbringing, Austrian loyalties common to the area and, perforce, a fascist education. For years, de Rachewiltz had no idea that Pound and Rudge, the benefactors who would sporadically appear, were her father and mother. Gradually the truth of her parentage was revealed, and with it the knowledge that Dorothy Shakespear, and not Olga, was Pound’s actual wife. Dorothy, in turn, kept her own secrets: while Pound signed the birth certificate of her son, Omar, and claimed legal paternity, he was not the boy’s biological father. Abstract: This volume explores familial wealth arrangements and gendered property from the fourteenth to the nineteenth centuries in Italian, German and Austrian territories (including Florence, Trento, Tyrol, and Vienna), Nordic countries, Western Pyrenees, and England. Family property as capital in the form of houses, land, movables, financial assets, and rights were of great importance in the past. Arrangements of such property were characterised by a high degree of negotiating competence but likewise they entailed competition between the parties involved and were highly conflict prone. Fifteen contributors from Austria, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, and the UK address different marital property regimes in relation to the practices and legal regulations of inheritance patterns with consideration to inter-familial negotiation, conflict, and resolution.

Abstract: Ezra Pound, T. S. Eliot, and Wyndham Lewis have all, to varying degrees, been the subject of studies that explore their ideology. All too often, however, these studies have not tackled the issue adequately, limiting their analytical approach to fascism or other phenomena such as anti-Semitism. Frequently, they have also sought to exculpate these writers or to normalise their political tendencies in an effort to circumnavigate the dilemma of how to address the paradox of right-wing artists who are both harbingers and opponents of the imagined trajectory of progressive modernity. This interdisciplinary study analyses the connections between literary Modernism and right-wing ideology. Moreover, it is the first academic study to explore the reception of these Modernist authors by today's far right, seeking to understand in what ways they use strategic readings of Modernist texts to legitimise right-wing ideology. By raising fundamental questions about the relationship between aesthetics and politics, this study ultimately challenges its readers to see their cultural practices as political. It wants to make visible and problematize the interdependencies of right-wing ideology and cultural production as well as reception in order to explain the (far) Right as a phenomenon deeply rooted in European history and cultural development. Abstract: Me and Fashion is a constellation of fashion photographs made by Brigitte Niedermair (born 1971) over the past 20 years. These images show how, informed by her parallel creative path as an independent art photographer, she continues to query and utilize her female perspective to expand the conventions and biases of the fashion image system. Niedermair's photographic collaborators and subjects tend to have training as dancers and can transform themselves into the material expression of the body as a language, adopting an "attitude of resistance" toward the camera. Me and Fashion is published for Niedermair's exhibition at the Museo di Palazzo Mocenigo during the 2019 Venice Biennale. Working with acclaimed photography curator Charlotte Cotton, Niedermair responds to the atmosphere of each room of the Palazzo Mocenigo, replacing historic paintings with her fashion and still-life photographs to both amplify and counter the embedded subtexts of gender and identity that permeate these predominantly 17th-century interiors.

Abstract: In the second volume of the series “Diptera Stelviana”, further results are published from the survey of the Diptera (flies and midges) in the South Tyrol part of the Stilfserjoch National Park (Italian Alps). Five Malaise traps were used, which were set up during the vegetative period of 2005 along a transect from the submontane to the alpine altitudinal zones (940 m to 2,135 m above NHN). After the guest foreword and the editor’s foreword on the impact of the “Nagoya Protocol” on biodiversity research, volume 2 continues with a comprehensive historical account of dipterological research in the South Tyrol since 1860. In the first part of this series which was published in 2008 more than 25.000 specimens of Diptera were dealt with.
