Abstract: Some political scientists argue that cleavages, especially the class cleavage, no longer represent a significant point of political conflict. This book takes issue with this claim, demonstrating that other cleavages structure party competition. This is nowhere more evident than in the European Alpine region. In “Challenges to Consensual Politics”, Caramani and Mény (2003) maintain that ethno-linguistic, centre-periphery, religious, and rural-urban factors continued to survive, indeed thrive, in the Alpine region, informing the party politics of territories such as Switzerland, South Tyrol, Lombardy, Austria, Bavaria and Valle dAosta. This book examines how issues relating to territory and identity have (re)emerged and have been strengthened in the Alpine region, overlapping with class and ideological dimensions of party politics. Decentralisation and supranational integration pose specific challenges and opportunities for political actors in the region, who must now negotiate between competing pressures – local, regional, national, supranational and global ones – and focus their strategies on multiple levels. In particular, political parties face the challenge of maintaining regional, cultural, and linguistic identities whilst responding to the perceived threat of immigration, ‘fuzzy borders’ and multiculturalism hastened by globalisation. The book focuses on strategies employed by political parties operating in the Alpine region and identities common themes and patterns of party competition. The emphasis is primarily on territorial cleavages related to demands for self-determination, and linguistic and cultural protection, while also examining how parties use these issues to inform socio-economic demands. Moreover, the focus is on how Alpine parties operate on multiple levels – the regional, national and European one – and how they have in some cases moved from ‘protest parties’ to parties in power. Abstract: Consider these facts. In Italy the right to worship, without discrimination, is enshrined within the constitution. There are 1.35 million Muslims in Italy and yet, officially, only eight mosques in the whole country. One consequence is that the Muslim population have accumulated a huge number of makeshift and temporary places of worship. These are housed in a variety of buildings including lock ups, garages, shops, warehouses and old factories. This shortage of places to worship is particularly acute in north east Italy – where the photographer Nicolò Degiorgis lives – home to many anti-Islamic campaigns headed by the right wing party Lega Nord. The dull images of the many and diverse buildings that house the makeshift mosques are printed on folded pages. You open up the gatefold to reveal the scenes inside the mosques, shot in full colour. The size of the gatherings varies, from large crowds who sometimes pray outside to a small room full to bursting, or to intimate groups of two or three Muslims. Degiorgis provides a fascinating glimpse of hidden world and leaves the conclusions about this project entirely in our own hands. (Verlagstext)

Abstract: Can literature be investigated through quantitative methods? Can style, empathy, and prestige be measured? This study attempts to respond to these questions by providing results from a selection of case studies taken from German literature of the 19th through the 21st century, including Goethe's "late style", Felix Salten, and the output of contemporary writers such as Florian Meimberg's "twitterature" and Daniel Glattauer's e-mail novel. Altogether, this study shows how the interplay among literary theory, stylometry, stylistics, sentiment analysis, empirical studies, and archival research can offer new answers to old questions regarding German literature and provide tools to formulate new questions and novel approaches to research.(Umschlagtext)

Abstract: Una piccola comunità ladina nelle Dolomiti, annessa all’Italia nel 1918, si trova nella necessità di legittimare la propria identità etno-linguistica entro i confini del nuovo Stato. Ripetuto è nel tempo il tentativo di definire se stessi, né italiani né tedeschi ma ladini, senza però riuscire appieno nello scopo di veder riconosciuta la propria specificità. La ricerca storica che Luciana Palla propone ricostruisce le scelte, le illusioni, le speranze, le strumentalizzazioni politiche in cui incorre la comunità di Fodom, insieme alle altre valli ladine dolomitiche, attraverso gli eventi traumatici della prima metà del ’900. Dal 1948 in poi la “questione ladina” si ripresenta puntualmente, spesso con irruenza ed è ancora oggi particolarmente attuale, fonte di discussioni e di polemiche nel Bellunese e nel Veneto, soprattutto dopo il referendum tenutosi il 28-29 ottobre 2007 a Livinallongo, Colle Santa Lucia e Cortina d’Ampezzo per ottenere il passaggio alla provincia di Bolzano. Abstract: Die ADA-Tagung 2023 hatte die Aufnahme neulateinischer Texte in das Curriculum des gymnasialen Lateinunterrichts zum Thema. Gerade im deutschen Sprachraum wurde neulateinische Literatur lange Zeit wenig beachtet und fand demnach kaum Eingang in den Universitätsbetrieb, erst in den 70er Jahres des 20. Jahrhunderts begann eine allmähliche Neuentdeckung der so genannten Neulateinischen Literatur. Die zentrale Frage des Kongresses war, ob und wie zusätzliche Inhalte bei sinkender Stundenzahl in den Lateinunterricht integriert werden sollten.
