Abstract: The publication «Christian Niccoli – Sketchbooks and drawings» is a collection of drawings made between 2010 and 2014. Christian Niccoli works primarily with video and video installation. The book presents the research behind his artistic practice as a series of drawings and storyboards. The artist uses this medium to capture ideas, intuitions and thoughts. Abstract: Walter Niedermayr (geb. 1952) hat seit Ende der 1980er-Jahre kontinuierlich in hochalpinen Regionen weltweit gearbeitet und sich mit der Präsenz und den Eingriffen des Menschen in diesen sensiblen Landschaften auseinandergesetzt. Im Winter 2009 wurde er nach Aspen, Colorado, eingeladen, und dort entstand eine weitere Serie seiner Werkgruppe Alpine Landschaften. In 42 mehrteiligen Foto- und Videoarbeiten zeigt der Künstler die winterliche Landschaft um den Skiort Aspen, die durch die Erschließung für den höchst anspruchsvollen Tourismus geprägt und gekennzeichnet ist: In seinen meisterhaft fotografierten Bildserien bleibt Niedermayr ein präziser und kritischer Beobachter der Veränderung und Anpassung von Landschaft durch den Homo touristicus. Die Publikation schließt an die raumbezogenen Arbeiten an, die im Zusammenhang mit den Bauten des japanischen Architektenteams Sanaa entstanden sind und somit an die Iran Serien. (Verlagstext)

Abstract: This volume explores familial wealth arrangements and gendered property from the fourteenth to the nineteenth centuries in Italian, German and Austrian territories (including Florence, Trento, Tyrol, and Vienna), Nordic countries, Western Pyrenees, and England. Family property as capital in the form of houses, land, movables, financial assets, and rights were of great importance in the past. Arrangements of such property were characterised by a high degree of negotiating competence but likewise they entailed competition between the parties involved and were highly conflict prone. Fifteen contributors from Austria, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, and the UK address different marital property regimes in relation to the practices and legal regulations of inheritance patterns with consideration to inter-familial negotiation, conflict, and resolution.

Abstract: This book sets out to try to understand why segregated schooling still exists, especially in northern Italy in South Tyrol where they practice ‘separate but equal’ education. Supported by the UN, the Austrian and Italian governments, the province is considered a ‘peace model’ due to its consociational approach to dealing with the region’s Nazi and Fascist past, which has led to a ‘negative peace’. The autonomy statutes, which derived from this ‘peace’, resulted in an education system that is linguistically segregated for the purposes of protecting South Tyrol’s ethnolinguistic minorities. Ann Wand is the Founder and Director of The Oxford Method, an online British university preparatory programme for international students interested in attending Britain’s top universities. She is also the Programme Manager for Customised Faculty led programmes in Oxford, England and Florence, Italy at the American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS). By examining responses to South Tyrol's education system, and its impact on local group dynamics, this book explores the implications that segregated schooling may have on second language acquisition. This case study will be of interest to students and scholars of Italian studies, anthropology, linguistic ethnography, sociolinguistics, and second language education.

Abstract: „Reality and Fiction“ ist das Ergebnis wiederholter Aufenthalte in New York sowie des Interesses an künstlerischer Streetphotography: Dapunt fotografierte Ausschnitte überdimensionaler Fassadenbilder (Megaprints oder auf Backsteinwände aufgetragene Bilder). Die Wahl des Ausschnitts lässt dabei den Übergang zwischen Realität und den Abbildern von Realität fließend erscheinen. Dapunt thematisiert damit eine Grundkonstante unserer Wahrnehmung von Bildern: der Zweifel an deren Wirklichkeitsgrad. Bei Dapunt fällt beides ineins: „Wirklichkeit“ und die – vorwiegend durch die Werbeindustrie gebrochenen – Abbilder von „Wirklichkeit“. Die Wirkung seiner Fotos beruht somit auf der formalen Spannung zweier Dimensionen und zweier miteinander konkurrierender Wirklichkeitsgrade, zu denen in der Materialität seiner Bilder eine weitere Ebene hinzugefügt wird. Abstract: Consider these facts. In Italy the right to worship, without discrimination, is enshrined within the constitution. There are 1.35 million Muslims in Italy and yet, officially, only eight mosques in the whole country. One consequence is that the Muslim population have accumulated a huge number of makeshift and temporary places of worship. These are housed in a variety of buildings including lock ups, garages, shops, warehouses and old factories. This shortage of places to worship is particularly acute in north east Italy – where the photographer Nicolò Degiorgis lives – home to many anti-Islamic campaigns headed by the right wing party Lega Nord. The dull images of the many and diverse buildings that house the makeshift mosques are printed on folded pages. You open up the gatefold to reveal the scenes inside the mosques, shot in full colour. The size of the gatherings varies, from large crowds who sometimes pray outside to a small room full to bursting, or to intimate groups of two or three Muslims. Degiorgis provides a fascinating glimpse of hidden world and leaves the conclusions about this project entirely in our own hands. (Verlagstext)

Abstract: On 19 June 1992 Austria and Italy declared the official resolution of the South Tyrol question - the dispute that had dominated relations between the two countries since the end of the First World War. While this bilingual province is today held up as a triumph of minority rights protection and a model for post-conflict societies across the world, the story of the South Tyrol since its amalgamation into the Italian state in 1919 has been a complex and often turbulent one. This book investigates the political role of the theatre in reflecting, shaping and subverting patterns of cultural identity among the German-speaking South Tyrolese. Taking as its starting point the representation of history in a series of ambitious theatrical productions from the 1970s to the present, this study offers close readings of texts and performances and an examination of the belated development of professional theatre in the province. The role of theatre is analysed in terms of the broader historical and sociocultural factors at play in the shaping of South Tyrolese identity. (Pressetext)
